On Tuesday
January
12,
2010
at about
5:00PM a
7.0
earthquake
hit
the
island
of
Haiti
just
10
miles to
the
southwest
of the
capital
city of
Port au
Prince.
This has
devastated
a
large
part
of
the city
and
surrounding areas
where about 3 million
of the 9 million total
people reside. The
death toll has
reached
in
excess of
200,000
people.
What must be done NOW?
- The first priority now is to provide food and safe shelter.
- The second priority is to continue medical assistance.
- The third priority is to begin rebuilding Haitian lives.
How can you help?
- You can contribute right here and
we will provide medical assistance,
housing, food, and whatever is needed to
rebuild Haitian lives.
What is Practical Compassion
doing?
- We provided updates below during the first
few months after the earthquake so
please
come
back
to
visit
and
tell
all
your
friends to
visit our site
as
well.
- We sent a medical team to Haiti on February 23, 2010 and
held medical clinics that served over 500
people at 4
different
locations.
- We are moving forward with plans to rebuild the orphanage at
Leurboug which was damaged by
the
earthquake. Additional housing will be
required since it grew
from 38 children to
57
as a
result of
the
earthquake and is
projected
to grow to
100. They
are currently living in tents.
- In October 2010, we sent money to supply fresh water in
the area where the cholera epidemic
broke out. We also saved the lives of some of the people
with
cholera by providing the necessary
medical assistance.
- In February 2011, we contracted to build 2
wells that will help alleviate
the cholera epidemic in
the Artibonite
Valley.
