WHY indeed.
Did you know?
That while you enjoy a luxury
vacation in the beautiful and
tropical
Dominican Republic, Haiti,
the POOREST NATION in the
hemisphere and third
poorest in the world with
less
than
1% of its forest remaining, occupies
the western third of that same
island?
Did you know?
While you brush your teeth
each morning, the people of Haiti
have less
access to clean water and sanitation than the residents
of Ethiopia or Sierra Leone?
Did you know?
Children in Haiti would have
never seen a big yellow school
bus; in fact,
school enrollment is only around 65% with almost
90% of schools being privately operated.
The great majority of
them are held in unsafe, makeshift
structures with unqualified teachers doing the instruction.
Food is rarely provided for the
students in any of these schools.

WHY indeed.
Consider …
The next time you are staring
blindly into your refrigerator
trying to
decide what to eat, OVER HALF of Haiti's population
are suffering from chronic
malnutrition and, will eat
"cakes" made
of clay
and
water to stave off their
hunger pangs.
Consider …
If you need to call a doctor
you just pick up your phone but
imagine what
you might do in Haiti where for every 100 people,
there are approximately two telephones.
Although, if you were in
Haiti you would never actually need
to call
a doctor, you have to go find one, as there is only
one doctor to
every 10,000 persons.
Why
HAITI?
WHY indeed.
When you are
thankful…
for
hospitals and birthing centers to care for you, your daughters
and granddaughters, cry that the maternal
mortality rate in
Haiti is comparable to
that of 75
years
ago in the United States.
When you are thankful…
that your preschool child has
recovered from a respiratory infection
or
diarrhea, anguish for the Haitian families who each year
bury at least 51,000 children, under age
five, who perish due
to those very same
treatable ailments.
