Why
Practical Compassion?
Here is just a sampling...
A
woman in
Leurboug, about 11 miles outside of
Port-au-Prince,
would
do her best to care
for up to 40
desperate
and
starving
orphaned
children
from
a
makeshift
tin
and
plywood
"building".
Advanced
malnutrition
indicators were
everywhere; large
bellies
on otherwise
bone
thin
bodies, and orange hair
that
should be
black. The medical
world calls the condition
"Kwashiorkor".
We call
it
DYING
NEEDLESSLY.
With help from Practical Compassion, they now
have a secure cement block home. A system
is in place where
they are assured of
and
receive FOOD
delivery each month and
vitamins
have
been
provided for
daily
distribution.
HOUSING,
FOOD,
VITAMINS…sounds
like
Practical
Compassion.
Oh,
and no
more
orange
hair!

Haitian
parents must
make enormous sacrifices in order to afford
just
an elementary
school education for a
child.
And what is the
advantage
of
going
to
school
if it is in
exchange
for
groceries?
It is
impossible
to
learn
and thrive
in
school
if
you
are
starving.
At an elementary school in Pont Sonde, northwest
of Port-au-Prince, we have several
programs where the investments
of donors
MAKE today
brighter
and
the
future
a
place for
OPPORTUNITIES.
The
Scholarship
Program
provides
the
annual
funds
necessary
for
a
child to have
a
uniform,
books,
attend
class
and, receive
the hot
lunches
provided.
Remember how
RELIEVED
you
were
when a
scholarship came
through
for
you
or
your
child? The
cost
for
attending
primary
school
is $300
per
year
($25 per
month)...the
average
Haitian
fortunate
enough to
have
a job
earns
less
than $400
per
year. The Food
Program
and the
Education
Program
are
the funding
buckets
for the schools
hot
lunches and
classroom
needs
respectively...we
aren't just talking
groceries and
chalk
either!
Food
must be
selected and
purchased at OPEN
markets, and taxied
to
the school, where
it
is
prepared
and
cooked.
All that
contributes
much to the
economy
AND means
a
steady
income for
some
local
women.
Students are
benefiting
from
school
essentials
like
chalk,
pencils,
benches for
seating,
AND teachers
who can
COUNT
on
getting
their
paycheck.
Supporting
the
local
economy,
EDUCATION,
FOOD, and
JOB
security...sounds
like
Practical
Compassion.

Practical Compassion
built
this school in Pont Sonde so that it
complied with current
government guidelines
for their school
system. This building
survived the 3
hurricanes that hit
Haiti in
August
and
September
of 2008. It
suffered
no
damage at all.
There are classrooms for
pre-kindergarten through grade 6. The
second floor contains 2
full bathrooms and
room to expand for
more classrooms.
Currently, 185
children attend and are
given one hot meal
each
school
day.

SAFE
drinking water is
rarely
available
without cost in Haiti.
While
most
adults have
developed a
reasonable level of
resistance
to
THEIR
contaminated
water,
infants and
small children
have
not. Even
if a child
IS
receiving some food
daily,
advanced
malnutrition
can
flourish due
to
parasite
infestation.
Practical
Compassion
helps
to
provide
clean,
safe
drinking
water
by
digging wells
for
the
local
population to
freely
use.
Our volunteer General Practitioner runs
free medical clinics in RURAL Haiti
treating patients from
sunrise to sunset.
By way of his
knowledge, donations
of
costly
pharmaceuticals, and
funds
contributed to
purchase
deworming
medicine
while IN
country,
hundreds of
Haitians receive
treatment
and,
thousands
of
children
are
wormed
EACH
visit.
Free
MEDICAL
CARE where
the
people
ARE...sounds
like Practical
Compassion.
